Proposed new bottle store in Newtown...

Please help us!

We are asking people in the Newtown community to write a formal objection letter to the District Licensing Agency. It's easy and it's fast!

WHY:
"Vee's Liquor Planet" are currently applying for a liquor licence to open a bottle store opposite Newtown School (at 90 Riddiford St).

The bottle store (and its advertising) would be directly visible from classrooms and the school playground, and would be open while kids walked home after school. We are opposing this because it will put the safety of our children and community at risk.

(You can read more here)

HOW:
We've pasted a template letter below to get you started. Please take five minutes to personalise and send away! It could make all the difference.

The last day for lodging objections is Thurs 26th January.

Your letter needs to look like this:

Your address: _________________________________

The Secretary
Wellington District Licensing Agency
PO Box 2199
Wellington

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: Premise Name: Vee’s Liquor Planet Ltd
Address: 90 Riddiford St
Newtown
Wellington

Type of licence: Liquor License (Off License)

- "I object to the granting of an off-licence to this applicant because of its impact on the Newtown community and neighbourhood, and because the grant of the licence would be against the Sale of Liquor Act's object of reducing liquor abuse. Under section 35 of the Sale of Liquor Act 1989, I ask the Authority to consider the impact on the neighbourhood generally and the object of the Act specifically when considering this application.

- I wish to confirm that I have an interest in this application which is greater than the public generally on the following basis:
[insert why you have an interest, ie. you live nearby/your kids attend a local school, you work locally etc]

- The particular impact on me from the grant of this licence would be: [insert tangible impact of bottle store on the objector personally]

- The grant of an off-licence to this applicant would increase, rather than reduce, the abuse of alcohol because: [insert reasons for this. Pointing to the provision of discount liquor to economically disadvantaged and with addiction issues can be set out here].

- For these reasons I object to the grant of an off-licence. It would contravene the object of the Act and would lead to a significant negative impact on the Newtown community."

I wish to appear should a formal hearing of this Application be held.

Yours sincerely,

Time Banking has arrived!

Time banking is the trading of skills within a community, using time rather than money, as the measurement tool (ie. I walk your dog, earning me a 'time credit' and then i 'spend' my time credit getting Bob to help me with my fence. Bob then spends the time credit he's earned to get Mary to babysit his kids. And so it goes..) As well as being a trading system, it can help to build new relationships, encourage local networking and give value to people's skills that we might not normally think twice about.

For more info on how time banking works, visit Lyttelton's Time Bank

To register your interest with the Wellington South Time Bank, encompassing Newtown, Berhampore and Island Bay, email the coordinator at wgtn.timebank@gmail.com and she will be in touch to organise a time to meet and sign up as a member.
